Why I make my bed everyday and you should too!
Midway through 2017 I started making my bed everyday. Whilst this might not sound like a big deal to you, for my wife and I, having never done this on a consistent basis it was a small but important forward move.
Before around august time we had only ever made the bed if someone was coming to stay with us and we wanted to show them how tidy we were (you know the score).
In a space of twenty four hours we made a decision to make the bed everyday, and since then we have not broken that habit once.
The day before we made the decision, I spoke to my father on the phone and he told me he had watched a Look North news interview with an admiral from the USA called William H McRaven. He was essentially plugging a new book based on his time in the Navy Seals and my dad sent me the youtube link to watch his speech at the University of Texas.
So I did.
In his speech he lays out his principles for success based on his military career and first up is the practise of making your bed daily. His reasons for making his bed were so compelling that I sent the clip to my wife and suggested we begin this habit ourselves.
Very simply, the Admiral lays out that if you make your bed in the morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day which will afford you a small sense of pride.
That accomplishment sets a habit of completing more tasks during the day and will encourage you to be successful.
If you’ve had a bad day you’ll come home to a bed that is made and that will encourage you that tomorrow is another day and will be better than today.
Finally, it shines a light on the fact that the little things matter. If you’re gong to build something big and impactful, take care of the fine details.
As I said it’s so simple I had to swipe and deploy this tactic. That afternoon I sent the link to my wife to watch as my thinking was that we both need to buy into this habit together. She watched it and agreed that it was a no-brainer so we committed to it. Our rule is the last person out of bed in the morning makes the bed (usually me as my wife is a super early riser!)
Having now adhered to this for around 5 months I can tell you that it’s a simple and easy task that does give you a sense of achievement. It finishes the room in the morning and sets you up for the next task which very often for me is making the coffee!
Why wouldn’t you do something so small that added so much value? It takes thirty seconds maximum and it just makes sense.
The admirals book is called Make Your Bed and you can pick it up on amazon HERE. Before you do that I would check out his speech below which gives you a good overview. Let me know what you think by leaving a comment on the site or drop me a message on the usual social channels @brendanchaplin
As always to your strength and success,
