Often I think there is a lack of clarity over how much things cost in business and life and what value really looks like. The article is aiming to give you real clarity on the price of goods in the business world.
I remember in my economics A-Level learning about a concept called Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) where a basket of goods from different countries is compared to see how much things cost in different parts of the world. What does a loaf of bread cost in the UK versus Spain. You can learn then how much it really costs to live in these countries and how well off you are etc etc.
Let me lay this out for you. And I can give you pretty damn accurate figures because I have paid them ALL and more. But of course do your own research too, find out for yourself.
An undergrad university degree. £30k over 3 years (part time). Plus accommodation and other fees.
Post graduate degrees. £8k-60k dependant on the course. Leeds University executive MBA is around £20k.
Nothing guaranteed at any stage with any of these literally a piece of paper and some knowledge (if you apply yourself).
Generic business coaching. £25k per year. Look at Action Coach, probably the market leaders in the generic business coaching field, do your own research but I can tell you they are around the 2-3k per month mark for anything bespoke.
**No guarantees of performance.
Marketing Agencies: £2k-5k per month. Let’s say you want someone to manage your Meta and Google Adwords. They will charge you according to your ad spend with a minimum fee. If you want them to do landing pages and copywriting it will be more. **No guarantees of performance.
Full time staff: Anyone in marketing, sales, business development is going to be £2-4k per month or £36k per year. And it goes up from there. An experienced commercial director could be £90-120k easily. Believe me I’ve paid it!
**No guarantees of performance.
Consultants: These people will come into your business and do a days work for a days pay. Expect to pay anything from £1k per day for decent people. Remember you get what you pay for. Any meaningful difference made will need to be multiple days per month so again you’re at £2-4k per month for great people here. **No guarantees of performance.
Financial Advisors, Legals and Deal Makers: When the time comes for you to raise finance, sell your business and all that cool stuff expect to pay significant fees here.
I hired a finance expert when I sold my business who charged me £10k for an audit and some financial modelling and then 3% of the sale as a success fee. To sell a business for as low as £1 million would cost you £50-75k easily. Then factor in more for a good tax advisor to help you keep that money!
This is normal practice and again no guarantees of performance.
Now look some of these numbers HAVE to be paid. They are the cost of doing business and everyone needs to be paid for their time and value they bring.
Across a 5-10 year business journey you’ll pay out hundreds of thousands and more in the above costs if you want to build, scale and exit a successful business.
But please understand this.
Investing in a years worth of business coaching and mentoring with an industry and specific niche expert who has launched, scaled and exited a 7 figure business and will work with you as a partner and deliver as close to guaranteed performance as you can possibly get is not going to be a few grand. But the value is there, IF you want to take this seriously and you want to make it happen and achieve your vision.
Imagine the speed of implementation, the access to the network and the favourable rates you’ll benefit from meaning you can hit the ground running and not mess around for months trying to find quality practitioners. Speed is the game.
In closing I think the degree comparison is a good one. For the price of an undergrad and/or post graduate degree you can work with me closely for one year, increase your income massively and gain business and mindset skills for LIFE.
No degree can offer that.
And the good news is there’s always funding available for great people with great ideas and I can help you with that.
